What to book after Labor Day

September is the quiet part of the calendar in Marina del Rey. Four things worth getting on it before the marina goes to sleep.

Marina del Rey empties out after Labor Day and the trades get their year back. For an owner that is the useful part of September: the people you have been waiting on since June will answer the phone.

Call the yard before you need the yard

Fall haul-out slots go on a first-call basis and the list fills in the two weeks after the holiday. If a haul is anywhere on your list for this year, the call is now. The date can move later; the place in the line cannot be bought back.

Put the divers back on a schedule

Growth tracks water temperature and how long the boat sat still, and both of those peaked in August. Whatever interval you were on in the spring, September is the month it either restarts deliberately or lapses quietly until March.

Write down what the summer used

The end of the season is the last moment you can still remember the season. Oil changed in June. The belt somebody swapped at the dock in July, whose name you would recognise but could not spell. The filter you bought and never fitted.

  • Engine hours as of today, written down once.
  • Anything replaced since the spring, and who replaced it.
  • Anything you noticed and chose to defer, in your own words.

That third line is the one owners skip and the one that pays for itself. A note saying you heard something at 2,000 rpm in July is worth having in February, when you are trying to describe it to a technician from memory.

Decide who visits until spring

A boat nobody sees between October and March leaves a six-month hole in its own history, and that is the part you cannot reconstruct afterward. A monthly wash or a standing dive is half about the work and half about somebody being aboard often enough to tell you what they saw.

The winter gap in a boat's record is written in September, by nobody deciding anything.

Whatever you choose, choose it this month, while the people who do it are still returning calls.

A winter with nobody aboard is a winter with nothing written down.
